The key distinction
Term coverage is designed for a stated period. Whole life is a form of permanent insurance with a cash-value component and policy-specific conditions. Compare the actual contract, not an assumed investment outcome.
A practical scenario
Imagine a parent identifying two goals: support during a child’s dependent years and a separate longer-lasting obligation. List the time horizon of each goal before looking at product names. Ask the licensed professional to explain what would happen if premiums became difficult to maintain, and which values in an illustration are guaranteed. The example does not recommend buying one policy or combining products. Its purpose is to keep the household’s questions visible while the alternatives are explained.
Your review checklist
- How long does each identified responsibility last?
- What premium commitment is shown over that period?
- Which benefits or values are guaranteed in the contract?
- What happens at term expiry or if payments stop?
- What conditions apply to loans, surrender, or conversion?
A common question
Is cash value the same as a promised investment return?
No. Ask for a clear explanation of guaranteed and non-guaranteed values, charges, access conditions, and effects on the policy.
